In the today’s society, with the development of modern technology, there is no doubt that mobile phone, as a perfect invention of technology communication, is one of the most essential things of people. It is common to see more and more mobile phone users have appeared in the universities everywhere.

This study, based on primary research, discusses the use of mobile phones among FSD students.Particularly, the objectives of this study are: (1) To discover the time and purposes of FSD students in using mobile phones, (2) to indicate disadvantages of cell phones and (3) to provide for viewers some useful solutions to cope with problems related to the use of mobile phone. This research explains clearly why students chosen their model and spent a lot of time on it by giving benefits of cell phone, purposes they use it and specific reasons for that. Besides, some tips which are given in this report are very necessary with students to make their use with mobile phones become more effective and safer .The results show that finance, , studying interruption and health issues are negative effects realized by FSD students.

Finally, based on the findings, the report draws the conclusion that students should take some concrete actions to use up at positive points’ mobile phones and change their attitude. 1. Introduction In the present age, mobile phone is a particular device with hundreds of news functions created everyday. This issue, thereby, has changed the using purpose of people towards their cell phones. Besides mobile phone now can be considered as a pocket laptop which has the same features like a real computer.Hence, people tend to “stick” with it much more than they used to do. In the article published on March 2, 2009 Rick C.

Hodgin reported that six in ten people (60%) of the world’s population has a cell phone subscription, increasing 45% after 7 years. Especially, the majority of this growing trend comes from poor and developing countries and Vietnam is not an exception. According to General Statistics Office of Vietnam, in 2010 Viet Nam had 142.

4 million mobile subscribers and this figure is expected to grow up by 3. 9 million in 2012. Unfortunately, even though it is a hot trend, here are not many articles were written about this and the qualities of those are not guaranteed, too. Most of them are advertisings to attract as much customers as possible. Rarely can we see an article about the real situation of using cell phone among scholars. “Nowadays, each student can own at least a mobile is not strange anymore.

But what are the benefits when using them? How to control and balance them in daily life? And even fashionable ? Those questions are being concerned very much but still hard to answer” (Truong Thuy Phuong Thuy 2006).Thus, this research is aimed to help readers understand the situation now, and to be more specific, we will focus on the main users of mobile phones _ students in general and FSD students in particular. The questions are all about the concerned : the time, purposes and negative impacts when using and owning mobile phones.

2. Methods This research paper is based on primary source of data acquired from a survey carried out within Faculty of Management and Tourism. Questionnare is the only method been used for 100 FSD to occupy.There are three main groups of questions in the form.

The first group consists of two closed questions from number 3 and 4, estimating the time with mobile phones among students. The three following questions: 5,6,7 reflects using purposes when having cell phones and the two last questions refers to the effects of owning mobile phones. The focal intention of those is to look deeper into the way university student use their mobile phones.

Furthermore, some effective advices were given by the surveyed to help other better solutions with those who addicted to mobile phones. . Results This section describes the results of the survey conducted to discover the use of mobile phones among FSD students. As shown in figure 1, most students usually use mobile phones for more than 2 hours a day, made up 44% while only 17% of students said that they spent less than 30 minutes on their mobile phone each day.

It is clearly seen from the bar chart above, students’ purposes in using mobile phones are divided into three main factors: studying, entertainment and others. This result is collected from aspects’ options of entertainment and others.As expected, the acquired results fully revealed the frequency of their use of mobile phone services.

The results showed that mobile phones are often used for entertaining such as playing games, listening to music, taking photos and surfing the internet. Also, almost half of students claimed that they sometimes used cell phone to study. With other intentions, SMS (short messages service) is always available in all the mobile phones used by students, amounted to 73% while only 29% of students often use it for voice calls. Besides, a small proportion of students (about 3%) use their cell phones to download games and record.From those figures above, we can see that students are facing a problem that they spend a lot of time for their mobiles and mostly for entertaining than learning. The third figures reflects attitude of students towards this situation and surprisingly, there is a contradiction.

Students seem to realize their bad habit. More than a half of them admitted that the minus point when using mobile phone can lead to financial problems (57 out of 100 students), time wasting and studying interruption, less, about 40 of them found out how it could affect our health and only around 8 people thought it could lead to problems with social relationships.However, 74% of students did not take any actions to recover the drawback. 4.

Discussion of findings 4. 1. The time and purposes for using mobile phones In our result of figure one, nearly a half of FSD students spent more than 2 hours per day for mobile phones not to mention up to 97% the questioned agreed that they are important devices and approximately 86% of the total started using mobiles more than one year ago. It is easy to understand if students had mobile phones when they were pupils in high-school because “the original aim of this issue is to make tighter connection between parents and children” (Thanh Huyen 2012).We have to admit that cell phone is an essential device. The most powerful function of a mobile phone to be mentioned is communication as it held the highest rank in “always” aspect (figure 2).

Mobile phones are most useful in emergencies. Students are exposured to other outside dangers and the best way to protect them is typically relies on mobile phones. Many scholars in FSD study away from home, they can contact their parents whenever they want and vice versa. If coming late at night, students should hold their telephone tightly and ready to call for help any time in case something happened.Additionally, university students have many friends and relationships, therefore, they need a phone to keep in touch daily and cell phones play an indispensable role in “connecting people” (a famous slogan of one of the most popular manufacturers of mobile phones – Nokia). What could be better between going out for kilometers to make phone call or just sitting at home, relaxing and chatting when the charge of those is nearly the same? However, gradually, as technology is developed each day and mobile phone is not an exception, the purposes of using it has also changed.According to figure 1, two thirds of 100 FSD students spent more than 1 hour for mobile phones per day and to figure 2, the second purpose of using cell phone which also frequently used is entertainment. Besides the means of efficient communication, mobiles are integrated greater technological availability and modern functions nearly as the same as computers.

It is not so surprised if a student can text messages, listen to music, take photos, check emails while surfing the internet and even watching T. V!All these features are no longer strange to students. New appliances are created every day allowing more activities a mobile phone can do. That can be considered why many students in general and FSD students in particular need mobile phone as an effectual way to reduce stress and schooling pressure, especially with a busy schedule in FSD. 4.

2. The negative effects of mobile phones However, from figure three, we can see that lots of demerits of abusing mobile phone are pointed out by FSD students. The biggest one is financial problems.Evidently, students do not earning money or not enough to charge their phones regularly. Most of the mobiles are given by their parents (answers of many in our questionnaire) even if students have part-time jobs, these salaries are not enough to afford their chatting habit through the phones, too.

They may save an amount of money to buy a good mobile but the fee to make calls, send messages, download games,… are paid mostly by their parents. That amount of money is better used for academic pursuit or other essential and important things.Moreover, mobile phones could easily be damaged or lost. And the cost for repairing and replacing is proportional to more modern cell phones. Imagining how the cost would be daily for months, not to talk of years! The second drawback of owning phones is time wasting. The more modern a telephone is and the more functions it has, the more time students spend to discover them. Instead of finding information related to the lessons which were taught in class, they feel more interesting in learning how to control their mobiles.

Hence, this leads to another important problem, is distraction in learning. Owing to “sticking” too much with the phone, students tend to neglect homework, assignments as they do not find out any attractiveness in doing those than playing games, checking out the notifications on facebook… And as a consequence, distraction in the early time will turn out to be academic interruption later. Coming to the next disadvantage, which according to us is emerge issue but not much surveyed students seemed to be aware of it, is health risk or medical side.Students who using cell phones regularly have higher chance suffering acoustic neuroma and glioma than the less ones (McVicar, N. 2012, ‘Cell phones and acoustic neuroma’) According to Nancy, handsets, especially cell phones, when in used give out radio radiation which is absorbed by its owner. Due to this radiation, people may increase the risk of brain tumors and other sickness related to the eye or body, even psychological problems as well if students are addicted to their mobiles. 5.

RecommendationsAs can be seen from the result section, nearly half of students asked claimed that they spent too much time on their mobile phone for entertaining than learning even though being aware of its demerits in almost all life aspects, especially in studying interruption, financial problems and medical side effects. Therefore, this part outlines some helpful suggestions in order to help students use cell phones effectively and safely. The fact that mobile phones offer new opportunity as educational technology that makes their studying become easier.Thus, students should try to use up mobile phone’s functions and all time spending on it for learning. For example, when listening to music, they should choose English songs and it can be a really efficient and fun way to learn English, listen to the lyric of the songs students like and then try to sing along with the singers or imitate their mouth movements.

As a matter of fact, the main purpose for people using cell phones is keeping in touch with others by sending messages or making calls.To limit the time spending on mobile phones, students should only buy cell phones which have those basic functions, not smart phones with so many features. Moreover, it will also improve financial issues when they must not pay for different kind of fees. The last but most important point is health risks. As we know, the electromagnetic radiation from cell phones does have potential link to medical effects that people should avoid. According to Dr.

Ronald Herberman, to limit at most hidden dangers from mobile phones people should keep mobile phones as far as possible from their body at all time, especially when sleeping and studying, they should also turn off it. 6. Conclusion All in all, we fully hope that our research report will be helpful for FSD students in using mobile phone when it has become an important technical device in students’ life nowadays. These subjects, we found that cell phones may cause some serious problems for students.However, they should not worry too much because that can be improved by different methods. It can be a useful academic tool, or a hurtful academic disturbance depending upon the attitude and use pattern of the student owner.

If the actions mentioned in recommendation section are taken by students, it can be better than government’s policy that mobile phones should be banned in universities because nothing can replace the convenience of cell phone. Thereby, students must change their use and viewpoint with it to avoid negative impacts.The changes should be adapted steadily as attitudes and behaviors until mobile phone use is as natural as using any other technology.
