In the small town of Maycomb, Alabama a racism problem arises in the county court system, when a black man is tried on attempted rape against a white girl. The story is based around the Finch family it consists of Atticus, Jem, Scout, Aunt Rachel and Calpernia. Atticus the father is put into a hard pressed situation when the judge appoints Atticus to defend Tom Robinson, the black man accused of raping a white girl. The whole town is against Atticus defending Tom and their whole family Is taking a verbal beating from members of the town that don’t like blacks people.The following paragraphs are going to be aimed at Jem Finch the oldest son who is starting to mature and understand things in a new way. Some of the things he is going to realize is that he has a new sense of family pride/caring; another is his new view on being a leader.

He is finally taking responsibility for all of his actions. Jem has defended Atticus in the weeks before the trial and one of the occasions is when Mrs.Dubose is talking badly about Atticus and Jem takes scouts baton and starts destroying her flowers and is saying that what she saying is not true and that he isn’t what she says, like in the quote” “this quote explains that Jem was only defending Atticus when he was being bad mouthed and that Jem wouldn’t let that happen when he is around to hear it. Another time when Jem is showing caring toward his family is when him scout and dill get caught sneaking onto the Radlys porch trying to see boo in the house.

He has to think about scout and dill when this happens because he cares about the members of his family more and more because he is finally getting mature enough to see how important they are to him. As a up and coming leader Jem has a handful of adventures when he takes control of the situation and when he has to make the right choice is when Jem scout and dill follow Atticus to see what he’s doing with the lamp downtown.When they get there Jem has to make a choice to try and help Atticus or to take scout and dill home as Atticus wishes be disobeying Atticus’s wishes he ultimately saves Atticus from taking a licking.

In the quote Jem shows leadership ” “this shows that Jem will take control when he has to and can make the right choices when the time calls for it. Jem has showed that he will take responsibility for his actions one example of this happening is after he destroys Mrs. Dubose flowers and goes to her house every day after school and reads to her.

He never knows that she was trying to break her addiction to morphine. He is showing responsibility in the following quote” “he is maturing to be a responsible young man and is showing it more and more in each page In the book To Kill A Mockingbird Jem finch is a maturing young man who is coming into his own and is starting to realize some very important things like being a good leader and reasonability for his actions and to care and think of the ones that matter to him.
