LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN TRAVEL AND TOURISM UNIT 14 Exploring Airports and Airlines Assignment No: 14b Assignment title: The Passengers Journey Subject Lecturer: Monish Bhandari For this task I will be explaining the passenger’s journey throughout an airport, and what they will come across. I’ll explain the journey from walking through the entrance to boarding your flight, there are also many facilities you and others will find useful. Functional areas-landside Check-in
As the passenger walks through the entrance they come across the automated check-in desk if this is convenient for you, an automated check-in is a self-check in system where you scan your passport and put in your reference number where you get from checking in online. This is a fast an easy way to check you in especially if you’re late for a flight and have no time to queue, the E-check-in (automated check in) is mostly used and there for people of business but can also be used by anyone who may want to check them self’s in faster than usually. If not there will be an alternative check in desk where someone can assist you.
You will need your passport and your reference number. The next step will be to check in your luggage, if you have a carry on then you will go straight to security if not then you can put your bags through to the fast track bags if you have checked in using the automated check in, if someone has assisted you than they will also check in your luggage. Check in E-check in Passport control There are two queues. One is for EU/UK and the other one if for non-EU/UK passengers. You have to make sure that all your necessary paper work is all up to date and you passport has not expired while you’re travelling.
That’s for safety reason and to be sure that you don’t have any criminal affairs or wanted anywhere around the world. Airport security When arriving at airport you have to show security your boarding card along with your passport then remove all metal objects for example jewellery, belts phones etc. and place all your items in a trey, it will go through an x-ray witch will show whether you are holding any illegal items, if you are it will be confiscated or if serious enough you will be arrested and will miss your flight.
If you have nothing to declare you will walk through a metal detector, to see if you are holding any illegal weapons. If you are metal free you will then walk through. You will be asked the usual security questions related to baggage. Arrivals meet & greet Knowing that it can be daunting to arrive in a new country, maybe for the first time, so that’s why it is nice to meet passengers at the airport and welcome them. Depending on the number of passengers arriving at the same time as, they will be met by either a taxi or a coach.
Passengers must be met in the Arrivals Hall and shown to your transportation. Functional areas- airside Departure gate It’s where you go to wait for your flight and show the staff there your passport and boarding card to get on your flight. This is where you might have to sit down and wait patiently for your flight to be ready, when you have been informed that the doors have opened and the flight is ready you will then queue up and have your passport and flight ticket in your hand and ready to show to a member of staff. Outbound and inbound Ramp operations
The staffs who work around the plane to make sure it’s safe and ready to depart for example checking the weight limit of the plane and being sure that the plane’s engine is safe and it will be safe during the flight to also make sure the flight runs smoothly and the passengers safety is their priority. Air traffic control A service provided by ground-based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace. The primary purpose of ATC systems worldwide is to separate aircraft to prevent collisions, to organize and expedite the flow of traffic, and to provide information and other support for pilots when able.
In some countries, ATC may also play a security or defence role, or be run entirely by the military. The staff there give information about the air traffic to the pilots to see if they should change their route to avoid collision. Baggage reclaim After passport control, follow the arrivals signs to the baggage reclaim area and check the information screens to find the correct carousel. Baggage trolleys are provided in the reclaim hall and other key areas around the terminal building. Immigration
At the passport desk a Border Force officer will ask to see your passport or travel document and any supporting documentation necessary for your visit. Please remember that your passport must not expire during your visit to the United Kingdom. Customs and excise There are three different channels one is green, red and blue. The blue channel is nothing to declare, red and green is something to declare and for passenger who’s travelling from a non EU country to an EU country. The green is for passenger’s who hasn’t got banned goods with them.
Customs and Excise prevent people from outside the country from smuggling anything illegal in to the country. Any passenger arriving in the UK may be asked questions to help prevent the illegal import of prohibited or restricted items. Food and drink outlets There are a lot of food and drink outlets available in the airside. So if you’re for an example two or three hours earlier, then you can choose one of the shops there to sit and eat before your plane arrived. At the Airport there will be a McDonalds, Cafe Rouge and Apostrophe and a lot more available to the passengers. Internet access points
One of the good accesses at the airport is the internet. Especially for the businessman/woman the internet access is a positive luxury, so with that they can easily do their work or prepare for a business meeting. This technology provides access to the Internet and the ability to get secure and fast connection to corporate networks while working away from the office. Users with a laptop and a Wireless LAN access card can access data at speeds of almost ten times faster than a standard 56k modem, enabling them to receive and send large volumes of data at broadband speed. Baggage trolleys
Usually baggage trolleys are found at the entrance of your terminal, if there is not one in site you ask the front desk where they are located and they will direct you to where they are. These are good for families because, when they travel with their children and got two or three . 0luggages with them they can use the trolleys. It would be easier for the parents to have everything under control. Children’s play area If you are early and your children need something to do, parents would find a children’s play area most covenant to them especially when they start to get a little out of hand then the play area would be suitable for them.
On top of that the parents can relax and prepare for their upcoming flight. Automated check-in machines These machines are mostly used by businessman/woman. Then they don’t have to stand in the queues even if their only carrying hand luggage. At the e-checking you have to scan your passport and type in your reference number. After that you get your Boarding ticket printed and you can go to security. Baby feeding room Even nursing moms need to travel so weather you’re taking the baby with you or not to the airport, you’ll want to find a nice clean place to breastfeed or pump.
It is a good opportunity for the parent or guardian to get some privacy to feed the baby. Without baby feeding rooms the parent/guardian would feel uncomfortable feeding the baby. Information Board Without the Information Board the passengers wouldn’t know where they have to go and when their plane would arrive. The board provides useful information that passengers must know in order to board their plane on time. The passengers would check the information board for their gate number and flight number and the time when the plane departs is also on the Information Screen.
Almost all areas of an airport are essential. At check-in you are always asked questions related to your luggage and these questions are asked because if at security they find something illegal you are then blamed for the items you have in your luggage. And also at check-in you will have to show them your passport, they will then acheck it to see if your passport is up to date and also if you’re wanted by the law, you will also have to show them your reference number then you will receive a boarding card which will need to be seen at security.
At an airport you may think that these are all unnecessary questions or actions but really it’s all done for the passenger’s safety and wellbeing. With good customer service skills and new and brighter technology the airport is only improving. But what if we didn’t have the essentials we need to keep our customers happy? WI fi is a positive aspect and is beneficial to any businessman/woman. It allows the businessman/woman to be in contact with his or her clients, friends and relatives. Furthermore the businessman/woman can also look over and prepare for their meeting or presentation while their waiting for their flight.
Baby feeding area is beneficial to all parents/carers because during their stay at the airport they will have an allocated area to feed their children. Shops are always a beneficial advantage for those passengers wanted to get their last minute items before boarding their flight. Toilets are a must! Their always clean and have toilet attendants, their located all around their airport for quick and easy access. A restaurant for those who are waiting and want some food or a drink witch is also very beneficial for diabetics.
Smoking area is also available to smokers even though it is not the best thing for your health, but to satisfy your negation cravings it will be available. Medical Care In the event that you need any kind of medical care at Heathrow, the airport has the facilities to look after you. There are emergency phones throughout the terminals, a health centre, plus a number of pharmacies Reference Page http://acronyms. thefreedictionary. com/Immigration+and+Passport+Service http://www. gatwickairport. com/at-the-airport/ http://www. eathrowairport. com/heathrow-airport-guide/arriving-passengers/immigration-and-passportsI – found this link very useful because it is very straight forward and helpful for a passenger who has never experienced travelling in an airport. http://www. stanstedairport. com/stansted-airport-guide/arriving-passengers/baggage-reclaim – i used this website for baggage reclaims, it was very easy and helpful. http://breastfeedinganywhere. wordpress. com/2010/10/02/airport-nursing-rooms/ http://www. heathrow-airport-guide. co. uk/medical-care. html
