Objective of Industrial Tour:-

 

The objective of industrial tour is
to upgrade and to nurture the theoretical knowledge of the one and to relate it
to the physical mechanism of the equipments. It just reinforces the base of the
concept and broadens the viewpoint of the knowledge. Apart from building
concepts it boosts our self confidence and builds the spirit of team work.

I would like to share my knowledge that
I got from this industrial tour

The industrial tour organized by the Department of
Petroleum Engineering of University of Technology and Management was conducted
from 31st January, 2016 to 04th February, 2016. This
visit was hosted by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Nazira (Assam). It
was 3 day visit during which students of B.Tech Petroleum Engineering were
taken to different oil fields of Assam Asset. 

This industrial
visit enhanced my knowledge to a great level as I am now aware of most of  the techniques involved in the drilling
operations. It enables me to visualize different parts and equipment used in
the drilling and production industry.

It also gave us
experience to meet the officials of the oil and gas industry. I would like to
thanks Prof. Edward F Osta for organising such a well arranged industrial visit
for us.

In our
industrial visit, we had a number of lectures and field visits organised by the

Day 1 (ONE) 
dated  Feb 01, 2016

On the first day of Industrial visit we were heartly
welcomed by the RTI (Regional Training Institute), in Nazira. Then we had a
lectures with Mr.
Raman Lakhera and Mr. Agarwal on the topics of Drilling Technology and Production
Operations respectively. And also they explained on the various techniques that
are used in their fields. They use Artificial Lift method such as gas lift.
Mainly the types of techniques used is Sucker Rod Pump.

                   
After this I would like to say on lectures which is taught by Mr. Raman
Lakhera and Mr. Agarwal. Mr.Raman Lakhera covered on different types of process
that comes under drilling technology and different types and also grades of
drilling pipes and casings. He also explained about some equipments that
facilities the process of drilling like centralizer, stabilizers, couplings,
and tubing joints, packers etc.,

               
After the completion of Mr.Raman Lakhera lecture , Mr.Agarwal took up
the carge and he explained different production processes. He mailnly focused
on safety factors of oil and gas industries. He also shared a disaster that
happened 3 or 4 months back that an employee fell down from the monkey board
and died because the employee didn’t wear safety equipment like helmet and
safety belt.  So he mainly focused on
safety elements and also explained us the different safety equipment that are
made compulsory in the oil and gas fields. Few of this safety equipment includes

After the lectures we had lunch
and then we visited to the ONGC Central  Workshop . There we saw non-working drawworks,
mudpumps, BOP etc, . In central workshop all the repairing works are going on
for nonworking equipments.

After that we went to visit
Geology labs, Chemistry lab and petroleum samples lab. . In the Geology
Lab, we were taken to visit the different section like palaeontology Lab,
Sedimentology lab, Core analysis lab and the oil library. In the Palaeontology,
we saw different fossils, foraminifera’s, paleo-thermometers etc. A lectures
over there explained how these fossils are used to determine the age or
chronology of the source and reservoir rocks. After this warm session, we went
to the core analysis lab where we saw different types of cores varying in sizes
and diameters. Then we were taken to the oil library where we were shown the
oil with different API gravities. The lab assistant over there explained us the
dependence of oil’s API gravity with the oil’s viscosity. There we were allowed
to see the oil samples with different oil viscosities. After the geology lab,
we went to the chemistry lab, where we learnt how to determine the porosity and
permeability of the core samples. A device over there called as “Poroperm” was
used to determine the porosity and permeability of the core samples. Here our
day 1 has been completed and we returned to hotel.

Day 2 dated Feb 02, 2016,

The
first part of Day 2:

On the
second day of industrial visit ONGC made arrangements for a field visit . In the morning time , we reached the Lakwa field GGS-VIII.
Entrance formalities were taken by the in-charge official of ONGC at the
security gate. After completing we first saw control cabin and then the
in-charge took us to the headers where collection of pipes were linked to it
coming from the 88 wells.

But this field had the capacity of
102 wells. He showed almost all the major pipelines leading to the pre-heater
tank. Then according to their respective positions of facilities he showed the
vertical separators and then to the heater treaters and then finally was the
storage tank. ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) was also there beside storage
tank. There was 7 fluid tanks, 2 fluid test tanks and 2 ETP with a  total of 11 tanks. At last we saw the gas
flare which was controlled by the pressure operated valves. All the valves were
non-return valve. The flare was of a jet type. All the unwanted gas were
released out through the gas flare.

Also we went into the control cabin
where he showed just how all the thing was controlled by the software in his
computer. He also told us about the software which was DCS (Distributive
Control System), and also about the PLC (Programmable Logic Control). He also
gave the direction on how to utilise the software and what can be done through
it.

 

 

 

The second
part of Day 2:

 In the evening time we went to Galeki field. The name of the rig was E-2000 V. On this particular day we  went to Galeki field where the process of
workover was going on due to the presence of leakage in the pipe. The drillers
were tripping in the drill pipe out of the well bore to remove the leakage
section. At that field we saw the power source which was driven by the diesel
engine. Beside of which was the compressor used to compress the diesel fuel to
generate spark and ignite. After this we saw the power engine having several AC
and DC ports. The machinery which were of quite importance and is to be manipulated
often times were connected to DC ports and big machinery were connected to the
AC ports. After this we went to see mud tank in which the mud was being
prepared. We also saw mud pit, desander, desilter, shale shaker, rotary hose,
mud pump, gooseneck, hook, swivel, top drive, and draworks too. Beside the
drill rig doghouses were there for the drillers to rest. We also interacted
with one of the engineers qulified through GATE exmination. He gave us the
directions on the methods of preparation. It helped us a lot.

Day 3: dated on Feb 03, 2016

 

We
started from hotel at 9:30am reached to WSS by 10:30am. Our plan visit was from
10:30am to 2:30pm. The employees working in WSS took students to WSS, CTU,
pipeline pigging, well service, well logging. 
CTU(coil tubing unit) is widely use in work over, completion, logging,
production and drilling.

 

 

 

 

 

 The different components of CTU are given
below with their functions.

Injector
head, bop, reel, goose neck, stripper, hydraulic system, control cabin. The
gooseneck mounted on top of the injector head feeds the tubing string from the
reel around a controlled radius into the injector head. The injector head to
provide the tractive effort to run and retrieve the coil tubing string. The
control cabin from which the equipment operators controls and monitors the
operation. Goose neck is a thick metal elbow connected to.

 

Then after visiting WSS we attended
the lecture on pipeline by Mr. Ajay Kumar Baheri. He told us about the way of economising the cost of
transportation from one part to another. He gave very good example of in
between pumping stations which used to maintain the pressure and the way to fix
the price. He also taught us about the PIGGING process and how to tackle the
related problems.

 

After this lecture we again
attended the lecture on well services by Mr. Akhilesh Kumar who cleared a lot of terminologies related to well
services. He taught us about the platophase production and what are the factors
affecting it’s production. He also taught us about the accuracy of installing
the mandrels in input of the SPM (Side Pocket Mandrels) which are located at a
very deep depth. Apart from this he brougth to our notice about the stealing of
various costly  parts and about the way
of governing by Central Government and their clash with the local residents.

After attending
the lectures the executive members of UTM-SPE Student Chapter members attended
the SPE conference of North-Eastern Chapter. In this conference a very
wonderful presentation was given on the difference was given between the
occupational safety and process safety. He also told us about how to take
precautions and safety measures in order to mitigate the process safety and
gave live examples on to maintain safety of individual as well.

do you mean by Pipeline Pigging?

 

A):
pipeline pigs are devices that are placed inside the pipe and traverse the                                     

      pipeline. Pigs may be used in
hydrostating testing and pipeline drying,                                                               
                                       internal
cleaning, internal coating, liquid management, batching and inspection

 

 

 

2) What do you understand by platophase production? How is it
possible?

A)Platophase production are called
those productions coming from the self- flowing well which is producing because
of it’s own pressure. It is possible only when the inflow pressure loss is
greater than outflow pressure loss.

industries and allowing us three day industrial visit to Nazira. He has been a
source of inspiration and always encouraged us to learn new things. We are
thankful to our Head of the department for his guidance and support in making

continuous efforts throughout the visit.

 

We hope
that this visit will help us in our future practical life and bring a positive
change in our thinking and practical behavior regarding education and specially

Educational
visit to Lakwa field, Galeky field, WSS was very informative. The guiding
faculty from college and industrial members was very supportive to all students
during the visit. Finally we are very much thankful to student coordinators
