Every four years, the United States of America holds an election to choose who will be their next president. Each president is only allowed to serve a maximum of two terms. This is to prevent a monarchy from forming over time. If there was no presidential election and no limit on presidential terms, America could easily go back to being under the rule of a single person or group of people. The people of America are the ones that decide who their next leader will be. They are given the opportunity to select who will represent them in the government.
However, many of them do not exercise their right to vote. America is based on the principle of popular sovereignty. In other words, the government only has the authority to do things that the people give it the power to do. Americans choose leaders to represent them in the government instead of every single person having a say in what goes on with the country.
These chosen leaders speak on behalf of the people and promote what citizens want as a whole. For it would be too difficult to take into consideration what each American would like to see from the government. All the things you hear from candidates during the election are pretty much the same thing. They want to improve deficiencies by changing certain things within the government.
In short, they would like to make America a better place overall. People get used to hearing the same promises every election and it never goes through. It is almost as if the candidates are only talking about all this reform in order to gain votes. This is one reason why many Americans choose not to exercise their right to vote.
People begin to question whether or not their vote is even effective. It is due to a lack of interest in taking part in elections. It’s like doing something without seeing any results. Why go through all the hassle of getting it done when nothing comes out of it.
Same thing goes for voting. Why should Americans take time to go cast a vote? They do not want to waste their time going to the polls and voting if their vote will not even make much a difference. Their lives will still go on regularly even with a new president in charge. Many Americans do not feel the urge to exercise their right to vote. This is despite the obvious fact that elections play a major role in the way the government is operated.
People do not feel like their vote is effective and are just not interested anymore. They would rather do something else productive instead of going to cast their votes. The way they look at it is that one vote will not drastically change an election and politicians say the same things every time the election is coming up in order to persuade voters.
