What Is Meant by the Term Equality Essay

Project one What is meant by the term equality? Equality can mean different things to different people; some people believe that equality means treating everyone the same. However you can not treat everyone as equal due to the fact that everyone has different backgrounds, life experiences, skills and knowledge. So no two people can really ever be the same. Individuality can be a positive attribute in all aspects of life.

Equality can be more accurately described as when people are given equal opportunities giving them access to the same rights, choices and resources no matter of their gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religious belief or cultural differences. What is meant by the term discrimination? Discrimination is often seen as a negative attribute when actually it can be a positive. Being able to identify the difference for example when the milk has gone off is seen as positive discrimination.

It is only when there is a degrading comment attached against a person, group, or race that it turns into negative discrimination. This often happens when there is seen to be one stronger person, group, or race within a culture that identifies a differences between them. Discriminations can be more than just degrading comments. If it is of a cultural pattern it can stop people being given the same rights, choices, and opportunities. Discrimination can happen simply because of which area you live in, age, religious belief, sexual orientation or just because of which football team you support.

Explain why Neil Thompson thinks that discrimination and oppression are closely linked. Neil Thompson states that “discrimination is a major contributory factor in relation to oppression. That is, a fundamental source of oppression is set of processes by which certain social groups are discriminated against and thereby disadvantaged. ” (2003:11) I think Neil Thompson in this statement explains why discrimination and oppression are linked. When one group or erson is discriminated against lets say homosexuals, they are not given the same rights, choices, and opportunities as heterosexuals just because of their sexual orientation. This would then lead them as a group or individual being disadvantaged and in turn lead to them being oppressed. Despite the social, legal, and political advances that have been launched in an attempt to grant homosexuals basic human rights, in some parts of the world they are still seen to be an inferior group which has lead to them being oppressed.

The Three different levels Neil Thompson Believes discrimination and oppression operate on. Neil Thompson believes the three different levels that discrimination and oppression operate on are personal, cultural and structural. The term PCS analysis is used. Discrimination on a personal level usually manifests itself as prejudice. An example of this could be that you are not given the same opportunities that other people are given in your work place like training or resources.

For example at my work we have a key code system on the front door, we gave this number to all district nurses that visit our home on a regular basis. Bar from one surgery, just because a member of the management team did not like one of their district nurses, this is discrimination on a personal level. Then there is the cultural level. Neil Thompson stated that (Cultural patterns can be identified through such factors as humour and language. Humour is used to set down boundaries, thereby defining the parameters of that particular cultural formation.

Language can be seen to fulfil a similar role. It is an integral part of how culture ‘operates’ as a social force. That is, language both reflects cultural norms, assumptions and patterns and contributes to their maintenance and their transmission from generation to generation) (Thompson: 2003:15) An example of cultural discrimination at my work place: Mr A one of our residents was verbally abusive towards and member of staff, who comes from the Philippines.

Mr A had been speaking to this member of staff in a manner that was inappropriate and using degrading comments about her. When a senior member of staff spoke to Mr A about this he stated “we had those kind of people working for us in my fathers house, why would I treat them like people when they are only good for cleaning and severing”. When staff spoke to Mr A’s family re this, his daughter stated that her grandfather had a farm and they had workers on it and some Philippines worked in the house. The last part of Neil Thompson PCS analysis is the structural level.

The structural level is how some industries like the media, Religion, and some political groups support people or groups who have cultural norms or personal belief that can be seen as discrimination, such as the Roman Catholic Church’s position on Homosexuality. i. e: that homosexuality is morally evil. These industries help glue together the other two factors of the PCS analysis, personal and cultural making them apart of everyday living. Question one At my place of work , we work to the National Care Standards, care homes for older people 2007.

Standard 8 : making choices: goes on to say how the resident should be able to succeed in meeting all aims that were put in place during the care planning set up. And that staff assist you in doing so. That residents are given all information and choices that are available to them, and given time to make their choice without feeling pressured by staff. Standard 10: exercising your rights: says that the residents should be assisted if they wish to see where their care plan is kept. And that this care plan is kept in a secure area which only appointed members of staff have access to.

Standard 16: private life: goes on to say that the residents should have control of their room and who enters it. The resident should be able to lock their door if the wish to, but staff will carry pass keys in case of emergency so they can gain access to the room. That the resident can make and receive telephone calls in a private area. And that the residents personal belongings will only be used by that resident unless they have stated other wise. These are just a few examples of the National Care Standards that my work uphold.
