In the essay “What makes God Godlike” by Jack Miles. a former Jesuit Priest. Miles strongly argues that God’s dynamic relationship with humanity is the context for God’s ain self-discovery in his personality and his desires. He traces God’s personality development demoing how God moves from action to action. and how at about every interpretative minute. Miles emphasizes the difference of God from other characters in history and other narratives. Miles uses many literary illustrations to exemplify his point and finally do the reader reexamine their mentality on God being the all-knowing and independent Godhead of life.
In his statement he emphasizes that God is unlike any other character in a narrative. in that God creates the other characters in his narrative and so God himself enters the scene. Miles besides goes on to explicate that God unlike any other character doesn’t have a distinguishable yesteryear. Miles says. “There are no escapades of God. ” He besides brings up the Gods from Grecian mythology. and how Zeus has his escapades and narratives of his life among his fellow Gods while God has no yesteryear. comes from nowhere. and has no life with anyone else other than the life which he must ship upon when he creates humanity and so is finally as dependant on them as worlds are to him.
God’s dependence on worlds comes away from. as Miles stated. “For him. the pursuit for a self-image is non an idle and optional indulgence but the exclusive and indispensable tool of his self-understanding. ” So it’s Gods pursuit for some self-understanding that compels him to do worlds in his image so that he may detect human nature and in bend figure out who he is. Bing an entity with no yesteryear. no memories. and no image of one’s ego is something that no other literary character has had to cover with. Coming back to Zeus. in Zeus’ narrative he has a definite yesteryear. he knows who he is. and what he wants.
Therefore readers of Zeus’ feats can bode as to what Zeus will make. and the reader can see what drives him to that class of action. Unlike God from which the reader buzzword infer anything as to what he may desire or may make because he has no past which can be looked at to find his class of action.
Miles greatest point of statement as to God being dependent on worlds has to be when he talks about God has no experience. Therefore. when God creates humanity he doesn’t truly cognize what he wants them to make or what it is that pleases him. He in kinds has to experience his manner out of the darkness. and Miles explains farther when he says. “ He ( God ) is like a manager whose histrions ne’er seem to acquire it right and who is. as a consequence. frequently angry but who doesn’t. himself. ever know beforehand what acquiring it right will be. ”
This is one of the more critical phrases from Miles work and it truly goes into deepness of how God needs humanity to calculate out what God himself wants. for his deficiency of experience makes him non truly understand who he ( God ) truly is or what his likes and disfavors are. This is why he created humanity in his image so that in bend humanity could assist him calculate out who he ( God ) is.
Critics of Mile’s work may reason that he construed his work merely to the book of generation. and that
